Prescription medicines for erectile dysfunction (ED) are called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which refers to the chemical mechanism of these treatments. Generally, PDE5 inhibitors work well and are safe for treating most men with ED, allowing intercourse in about 70% of users.⁷⁵

Oral medication is designed to improve blood flow to the penis and combined with sexual stimulation, may produce an erection. Drug therapy is usually a first-line treatment option for most men experiencing ED and may be used in conjunction with other methods as well.

Oral medications require sexual stimulation and are usually taken within 1 hour before anticipated sexual activity. Typically, oral medications work for up to 4 hours and are not to be taken more than once a day. Some oral medications’ effectiveness may be affected by food, please speak to your GP or urologists about whether oral medications might be right for you.
